“Neo-soul is a combination of jazz, funk, hip-hop and pop.
“It is considered still new in the country.
“I hope to familiarise Malaysians with the genre,” said Najwa at her album launch yesterday.
At the event, a teary Najwa revealed she dreamed of becoming a singer ever since she was seven.
She added that she wrote most of the 10 English tracks on her debut album at the age of 16 and 17.
Earlier this month, the 25-year-old performed for a crowd of 9,000 as the opening act for Canadian singer Michael Buble’s concert in Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam.
“It was a great experience!
“Every time I open for these amazing acts, I get to see what really goes on behind the scenes,” said Najwa.
She had also opened for R&B stars Babyface and Ne-yo last year.
Currently, she is pursuing her degree at Berklee College of Music in the United States.
“I still have two more years to go but I will definitely come back here when I’m done,” she said.
